San Francisco based group The M Machine has long been delighting us with their unique brand of other-worldly electro. Their two part Metropolis EP, which now feels like forever ago, was an ambitious undertaking marrying narrative storytelling with dance-floor ready sounds that worked well together as well as individually. A lot has happened since then, including the departure of one of their members, but The M Machine has remained innovative and unique throughout.
This time they’ve returned with a sprawling 7-minute long remix of Moving Castle member, Manilla Killa’s track “All That’s Left”. The M Machine take us on a long odyssey through sci-fi soundscapes with sparkling and sprawling synths that twinkle like the cosmos. From a bright and bubbly intro the remix then gets dark with a heavily intricate techno build-up that gives way to a euphoric drop with anthemic electric guitars. There is even a Justice-style breakdown that fits perfectly with the rock-n-roll path the track goes down. Joni Fatora’s hypnotic vocals effortlessly glide on top with phrase like “we go round ‘n round, on this carousel” swirling around the various blips and clicks of the track’s mechanical percussion. Our journey through the cosmos comes full circle with the same pillowy sounds that we began with. An absolutely astounding remix, The M Machine continues to be a fresh voice in dance music.
