When he’s not making hilarious “Drunk Pick Up Lines” videos with Dillon Francis, Getter is busy producing amazing bass music. Although the masses only seem to know him for his “Suh Dude” videos and memes, the San Jose native has been quietly ripping up the dubstep world for a couple years now. Today Tanner Petulla, aka Getter released his most diverse EP to date. Titled “”Radical Dude!”, the EP is six tracks long and features dubstep, trap, and even some future bassish stuff. My favorite track from the EP is “Blood ft. Georgia Ku”. It’s got that classic dubstep slasher sound that Getter fans have been craving. The second drop however completely changes up the feel to the song, with a slowed down 808 bass line coupled with the chopped vocals of Ku.
This next artist is a bit less well known than Getter, but none the less extremely talented at what he does. This DJ/producer duo has caught the attention of some of the biggest players in the electronic music world, being featured in BBC Radio 1 Xtra sets from DJ Snake, Dillon Francis, and HeRobust. This original track of theirs titled “RELOADED” came out about a month ago, and it one of the most ground breaking trap songs I’ve ever heard in my life. The track features a sample of Big L, famously used in Datsik’s OG dubstep heater “Firepower”. The way they whip the bass around in this song is unlike anything I have heard before. Check it out for yourself to see what I mean!
Datsik is considered by many to be one of the god fathers of modern dubstep. With early success for his works dating back to 2009, Troy Beetles has been altering, refining and adding to his sound steadily over the last 7 years. The creator and owner of Firepower Records has been rather quiet of late, not having released any of his own original music since his collaboration with Snoop Dog, “Smoke Bomb” dropped about four months ago. Today however he released the first track from his upcoming EP titled “Darkstar” which is set to release on March 25th. The song is a collaboration with Firepower Records newest signee Zack The Lad who got a ton of exposure last month with the release of his debut EP “Black Sheep”. Many hardcore Firepower fans were quite surprised when Datsik signed an artist with a much more mellow, melodic approach to making bass music. Now Datsik has partnered up with him for the a track titled “Feel Good”. It’s an extremely unique song in that you can really feel the different elements that both Datsik and Zack The Lad bring to it.
Lastly, we examine the newest masterpiece by the mysterious up and coming LA based producer Grey. Remixing Zedd’s track “True Colors”, Grey has once again astonished me with his one of its kind blend of dubstep, trap, and electro. Though it is not publically know who Grey is, it’s safe to guess that it is someone who already has an in with the big names in the electronic music industry. This is his third remix he’s done for Zedd now, previously working his magic on “Beautiful Now” and “Papercuts”, and he’s also remixed Jack U and Kaskade. Some have even suggested that it is a new alter ego of Zedd’s, a theory that I don’t is completely out of the question.
Grey really did a number on this “True Colors” remix. Although there is only one drop, the song has perfectly balanced feel to it, slowly and calmly building up with soft piano and acoustic guitar riffs. Adding layer after layer of sound, until the drop comes crashing down, the meat of the track reminds me a lot of 2012 Skrillex electro bass music with a more melodic twist. Then, as quickly as it came, the song fades away again with a blissful guitar riff and the sound of a quite thunderstorm echoing in the background. Expect big things coming from this mystifying force in the future.
