G Jones is an artist that I’ve been listening to since the beginning of my EDM listening days. A Santa Cruz native, he always seemed to be doing shows in the Bay Area. G Jones is a broken beat dance music legend, and rightfully so. The man has released an album and 3 incredible EPs including one joint EP with Bleep Bloop. His extremely distinctive and experimental sound he produces reminds me a lot of the twisted bass of Bassnectar.
Four days ago G Jones released his latest single, titled “Fuck What You Heard”, and it has got to be one of the most out there, insane, mind contorting songs I have heard in years. From the beginning of the song, the listener is dragged into an underwater psychedelic flurry of bass that grabs hold and doesn’t let go until an abrupt ending. G Jones has a huge show in Santa Cruz coming up in about two months with fellow Bay Area native Minnesota where the two will perform a special b2b set with opening support from Bleep Bloop.
The next song is by Laxx, one of Never Say Die Record Label’s not so secret weapons. This impressive DJ and producer has been putting out a lot of great work lately, such as his two collaborations on Brillz’s most recent EP.
A few weeks back I wrote about Laxx’s new track “Twitch”, which was the first release of a three song EP called “Twitch Part 1”. Now Laxx has returned to finish off the two part EP with “Twitch Part 2”. Laxx’s production style for “Get Up”, the first song on the EP, reminds me a lot of “Twitch” in his exceptional ability to blend trap music with heavy dubstep influences. This is the kind of track that gets played at a show and even if everyone doesn’t recognize it, madness ensues due to the insane energy it displays. But with a few more releases of this caliber Laxx will be a common name in the average EDM household.
