Little is known about the mysterious Bear Grillz, a very talented new dubstep/trap artist who is signed to Datsik’s record label Firepower Records. His Soundcloud account says he’s from Yosemite, and the only pictures that can be found of him are either that of a cartoon bear or him performing live, where he always wears a large bear costume head piece. The mystique that is created from staying anonymous has been a big part of his recent incline into EDM stardom. Just like other mystery men like Zhu and Marshmello, Bear Grillz keeps his identity undisclosed as a means of showing his commitment to the music alone. Bear Grillz first burst onto the scene about a year and a half ago when he released his debut EP titled “The High Grade EP” through Firepower Records featuring his hit single “Demons”. Since then he has released four more EP and a few singles including one collaboration with Datsik. This brand new Bear Grillz remix of Excsion’s “Night Shine” has got to be one of his best tracks to date. The track begins with the same beautiful lyrics sung by Luciana, but at a slightly increased pace compared to the original. The first half of the drop has the normal Bear Grillz filth to it, while the second half brings a more melodic and less abrasive style of bass to it, reminding me of a Pegboard Nerds track. This track is coming out just a month after his last EP, “Bear Grillz & Friends Vol. 2”, dropped, so we know he’s definitely not slacking!
Delta Heavy is one of drum and bass’s most prominent and established artists. The duo is based out of London and has released music through both RAM and Viper Records, starting back in 2010. Ben Hall and Simon James together make Delta Heavy, a group likened to early Camo & Krooked . “Ghosts” is their newest release, this time through RAM Records, and it’s everything a drum and bass fiend needs in a track; beautiful female vocals, a pounding bass line and high intensity percussions. In this track the high end of the melody dances all around creating a perfect combination with the vocalist’s lyrics and the heavy hitting bass line, reminding me of an old school Nero song. “Ghosts” is the first single off Delta Heavy’s upcoming EP which is set to be released July 17th.
Protohype finally just dropped his latest EP titled “The Dog House”. The EP features four collaborations with HeRobust (which I wrote about in last week’s post), Far East Movement, Paper Diamond and Init and one more original. Just like Bear Grillz, Protohype is also signed to Datsik’s Firepower Records and for the exact same reason being that his music is filthy as a blood hound from hell. This track, title “Ultimate Punch”, is my favorite on the EP because of its hip-hop and trap influences in the intro in combination with the ear drum shattering dubstep style synths that come in the drop. When the drop comes around, the song switches from what sounds like an orchestral introduction that would be used in an old western movie into a crushing dubstep melody which makes the listener feel as if they’re standing next to an enormous bass canon firing round after round of filth ridden synths at a giant metal dinosaur. All in all, this track is one that will most likely be getting played a lot this summer as festival season rolls around.
