The trend of calling remixes a “refix” is gaining popularity again. I’m not sure how I feel about this change in lingo because it sounds like the producer is saying the song needed to be fixed. A refix is typically not as modified as a remix is and that is the distinction producers are making by calling it such. However, I would rather stick with calling an artists’ re-interpretation of a song a remix but nevertheless good things come from retouching a song in a new way.
Our first song this week is a pseudo-throwback since Bone N Skin did a refix to Zomboy’s “Skull n Bones.” If you know the original as well as I do this refix can really mess with your head. Many of melodies follow their original progression but Bone N Skin drags them back and hits repeat letting that beat play one more time. Like I said a refix has very minor changes but they can be noticed if you listen closely enough.
Spag Heddy will change any previous expectations with this new remix of “Time” from Helen Corry. The supremely high pitched synths that define the Spag Heddy sound blend fluidly with the female vocals, and Helen Corry passionately builds up the energy of the song as she sings that “we are running out of time.”
This young producer in Ohio, Drought has been refining his productions over the months and now we can “Escape” to the sharp sounding time warping realm of his dubstep. Every sound in this song is crisp and the low rumbling reverberations with drums push us further and further into spaces unknown and new. This song is smooth from start to finish gently ending where it all began.
And lastly is VAYPAY with “Space Eclipse” which is a free download from Electrostep Network! And interestingly enough if you listen closely, I hear a lot of influence from Spag Heddy. VAYPAY also loves these high pitched melodies to collide with the largest rumbles and grumbles possible from heavy bass. But a great drop is nothing without a introduction and interlude and the tonal quality of those parts fits well together.
Let the beats take you to places beyond
