Since last week I decided to change it up and check out some beautifully hypnotic melodic dubstep I figured I would take this week to give some attention to the interesting offshoot of dubstep that is heavily influenced by drum & bass: drumstep. And a quick little laugh for you, before I knew what this sub-genre was all about Urban Dictionary pretty much broke it down perfectly
Drumstep is the incestuous lovechild of Drum ‘n’ Bass and Dubstep
This first one is a remix of Embrace One & Shaz Sparks’ “Flight” from Dec3mber and is definitely a little more on the dubstep side of a drumstep track. Retaining the tempo of the original, this remix transforms the spiritual melodic quality of the original into a drum heavy assault of a more popular array of syncopated synths and growling distortions. It also draws a lot on some glitch hop style patterns fusing them together softly giving a robotic and choppy quality to the song as well.
Next up is a special (and free) release from SIDEPROJECT who just hit 5,000 followers on Soundcloud, called “Star Cluster.” Immediately this song is not playing around by promptly establishing a steady beat supplemented by a low background bass pulse. As the melody begins to fade away and the everything speeds to an abrupt stop, get ready to be blown away with some galaxy shattering distortions.
And from an artist I haven’t featured in quite some time but has still be releasing tracks non-stop is Spag Heddy and this fun drumstep tune “Echo From The Mountains.” This could easily be confused with some older Spag Heddy songs but for the obvious reason this has some heavy drums not typical of the artist but perfectly ingrained against synths that are used to dancing to a faster pace.
This final one for our drumstep week is an unbelievably filthy collaboration between Downlink and Twofold aptly named “Darkside.” A combination of the title, the omniscient muffled male voice and sirens in the first 50 seconds barely prepare for the machine-gun war-like fight of snarled synths and a robust steady drum beat. Dark the force is with this one.
Let the drums take you to places beyond
